A structural discrete size and topology optimization method with extended approximation concepts

Abstract This work focused on the discrete size and topology optimization problems for structures that could be composed of bars, beams, plates, or a combination them. A corresponding method was put forward based approximate concepts were extended from one applied in previous engineering method. In proposed method, primal problem firstly transformed into series explicitly involving both 0/1 variables with concepts. determined genetic algorithm (GA), optimized after determining variables. optimization, supposed as continuous determined, $${\overline{\mathbf{X}}}^{{\left( {\mathbf{p}} \right)}}$$ X ¯ p , dual through second-level problems. Then available values adjacent to selected original set, further these GA. Structural analyses only conducted before establishing iteration cycles. Numerical examples given illustrate performance this results indicate is quite efficient problem.
